Tea experience with Horana Plantations PLC

With a rich history of over 130 years, located at an elevation between 3,600 to 5,300 feet above sea level, Horana Plantations' Tea Estate are situated in Upcot bordering Maskeliya, in Nuwara Eliya district. The original Tea factories established in 1936 is still being maintained in very good condition and the Teas manufactured here are recognized as Premium Quality Teas, both locally and internationally. With sustainability at the core of our operations, this estate has been certified as ‘Carbon Neutral’ based on the green energy generated from Solar, Forestry initiatives, reduction of Carbon emission and others initiatives aligned to support our overall sustainability agenda.

Gouravilla, Alton and Fairlawn Tea Estates are complete treasure trove for any traveler who seeks to experience the Tea Country surrounded by unspoiled nature and well-manicured Tea Fields. Further, it’s also home for some of Sri Lanka’s native endangered wildlife such as the Sri Lankan Leopard and the Sambar Deer along with endemic birds to Sri Lanka such as the Jungle Fowl, Dull-blue Flycatcher, Sri Lanka white-eye, Layard's parakeet and Blue Magpie (found exclusively in Sri Lanka) which could be easily spotted in these parts.

GOURAVILLA
Gouravilla Estate is situated the in Upcot, Maskeliya in the Nuwara Eliya Western high grown range. The Estate is 10Km from Maskeliya and 22Km from Hatton via the Alton Road. The Estate covers an area of nearly 300 hectares (740 acres) and lies at an elevation of 3600 to 5300 feet. The principal crop on the Estate is tea. The history of the Estate goes back to 1922, when the Estate was managed by George Steuarts & Co and owned by Standard Tea Company (Ceylon) Ltd. The Estate factory was originally constructed in 1936.

STOCKHOLM
Stockholm Estate is situated the in the Central Western high range around the Upcot, Maskeliya agro climatic area of the Nuwara Eliya district. The Estate lies at an elevation of 4800 feet from mean sea level bordering the Balangoda mountain range and close to Adams Peak. The principal crop on the Estate is tea, covering an area of 305 hectares (750 acres). The Estate was established in 1922 under the ownership of Mackwoods Ltd. From 1975 to 1992 to Estate was owned by the Sri Lanka State Plantations Corporation following the Nationalization of the Estate with the Land Reform Commission Act. Following privatization of estates in 1992, the management of Stockholm was taken over by Horana Plantations

ALTON
Alton Estate is situated the in Maskeliya Upcot agro climatic area in the Nuwara Eliya district. The Estate is 10Km from Maskeliya and 22Km from Hatton. The principal crop on the Estate is tea. At an elevation between 4700 and 5550 feet, the Estate covers an area of 350 hectares (865 acres). The history of the Estate can be traced back to 1927, when the Estate was owned by Ceylon Tea Plantations Company and managed by George Steuarts & Co till the Nationalisation of plantations in 1975. With the privatisation of estates in 1992, Alton was taken over by Horana Plantations PLC

TILLICOULTRY
Tillicoultry Estate is located in the Nuwara Eliya district, 2Km from the Lindula town and 7Km from Talawakelle Railway Station. The Estate covers an area of 377 hectares (930 acres), at an elevation between 4200 and 5000 feet above sea level. While mature tea plants cover most of the Esate, timber blocks cover an area of 42 hectares. Up until 1975 and the Nationalisation of estates, Tillcoultry was owned by Dimbulla Valley Plantations Limited. From 1975 to 1992 the Estate was under the control of the Janatha Estate Development Board and was subsequently handed over to Horana

The Tea Tour

Under this concept, a detailed guided tour of the artistic process from Leaf to Cup would be provided. Based on the time the visitor hopes to spend, the tour will be customized to suit their requirement and convenience.

  • - Walk in the field with a veteran explaining the life of a Tea planter and the history of Ceylon Tea.
  • - Learn to pluck tender tea leaves with our Tea harvesters.
  • - Witness the process of Tea Manufacturing in our very own factories.
  • - Private tasting session of some of our most special teas while learning method of tasting teas
  • - A private High-tea.
  • - A memorabilia of the visit along with a pack of Factory Fresh Single Estate teas that could be take back home with them.
  • - If the visitor is able to stay an additional day, they will be able to take home the Tea leaves they harvested which will be handmade and packed for them to take home as black Teas or even have the opportunity to enjoy the tea blending experience with exquisite Floral and Spice ingredients with the support of our Master Blender

‘Fairlawn Falls’

Fairlawn Falls, is a picturesque waterfall located in the Fairlawn Estate, (Our own Estate) near Maskeliya in the Nuwara Eliya District of Sri Lanka.

The Fairlawn stream originates from the 1810-meter-high Sri Pada Reserve, contributing to the fall’s flow. As the water cascades down the rock face, it creates a serene and captivating natural spectacle. The lush surroundings and tranquil pools add to the allure of Fairlawn Falls

‘Gartmore Falls’

Gartmore Falls is a little-known piece of paradise and a beautiful waterfall spilling into the Maskeliya Reservoir which is 10 km away from the Tea Centre that could easily be accessed within 30 minutes by vehicle.

‘Moray Falls’

Merely 500 meters to the west is Moray Falls. Fed by a stream originating from the Samanala (Butterfly) Mountain Range and ends up at the Muskeliya Reservoir at the bottom of the fall. This fall beautifully cascades in 3 levels before reaching the bottom.

‘Kew Gap’

Known as ‘Kew Gap’ in Alton estate, merely 3km from the Tea Factory, there is a point where the traveler could experience a magnificent 180 degree view of the plains which includes the Adams peak and Gouwrawilla Plains.
