The ISO 14064 standard published in 2006 is a part of the ISO 14000 series of International Standards for environmental management. It specifies principles and requirements at the organization level for quantification and reporting of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. It includes requirements for the design, development, management, reporting and verification of an organization’s GHG inventory. Certified by the Sri Lanka Climate Fund (SLCF), which is a private-public partnership company under the purview of the Ministry of Mahaweli Development and Environment, all direct emission sources and indirect sources have been accounted for in the GHG inventory across the eight tea estates making Horana Plantations verified under the ISO 14064 standard in 2021. One of the largest sources of our CO2 emissions is purchased electricity, thus, in order to reduce the GHG emissions associated with the estate operations, we actively reduced the grid electricity consumption by both reducing its energy demand via energy efficiency improvements and promoting renewable energy usage. Therefore we have set the following energy management targets by practicing following strategies; We continue to develop and improve our carbon management strategy and identify new opportunities for carbon reduction. Total GHG emission recorded for our Tea Plantations is 3,331 tonesCO2/year. We are planning to reduce the carbon emission drastically and our ultimate target is to carbon neutral our Tea’s by 2030.
Horana Plantations sign a pledge with executive secretary of United Nations framework convention on climate change (UNFCCC) and confirm to accelerate the transformative change needed to reach global net-Zero greenhouse gas emission by 2050 or earlier through the commitment to CNN initiative. Climate Neutral Now was launched by UN Climate Change in 2015, encouraging all stakeholders in society to implement action to achieve a climate neutral world by mid-century, as enshrined in the Paris Agreement adopted the same year. It proposes an immediate set of actions: measure, reduce and offset with trustworthy carbon credits, including those recognized under the United Nations Climate Change Convention. Committing to taking these three steps incentivizes behavioral changes within companies, organizations, individuals, whom in turn will drive the change within their industries and networks. Climate Neutral Now invites companies, organizations, governments and citizens to work towards climate neutrality by reducing their climate footprint through a 3-steps method, whereby they Measure (estimate) their greenhouse gas emissions; Reduce them as much as possible; and Compensate those which cannot currently be avoided by using UNFCCC-recognized offsets, totally or partially. By successfully complying the CNN initiatives, Horana Plantations honored with gold status for measuring and bronze status for reducing the Organizational carbon foot print. Further, we have set the targets to offset of our carbon emission and Carbon neutral our Tea’s by 2030.
